Erik, a leading expert in accessory dwelling units, recently clarified the distinctions between an ADU and a DADU, a topic that often confuses homeowners. "In the past," he explained, "it was more technically just an ADU, an accessory dwelling unit." However, with recent adjustments and increased opportunities for these units, a crucial differentiation has emerged.

"An ADU is an attached dwelling unit, while a DADU is a detached dwelling unit," Erik stated concisely. He offered clear examples to illustrate the difference. An ADU, he explained, could be a living space above a garage, a converted basement, a renovated back room, or an addition directly connected to the main home. In contrast, a DADU is a completely separate structure, such as a detached garage converted into a living space or a standalone unit built on the property, not physically connected to the primary residence.

Understanding these distinctions is key for anyone considering adding a secondary dwelling to their property.
