What Do Homeowners Need to Consider Before Starting a Remodel?

When planning a remodel, Erik emphasizes that homeowners often overlook two critical considerations: having a clear vision for the design and establishing a transparent budget early on.

Erik's team always begins by creating what they call the "whole world estimate," which encompasses every single wish the client has from A to Z. This allows the client to see the full potential, and more importantly, the full cost. "If the budget is not friendly to what they were expecting," Erik explains, "then we can notch down and work out different scenarios to provide better pricing." This approach avoids the client being surprised by costs at the end of the project.

The second major factor is giving the design-build firm a clear direction on style. As a firm that can execute any style—mid-modern, craftsman, colonial—Erik stresses that time is wasted if the client is unsure. He recommends gathering inspiration beforehand. "Go to Pinterest, go to Houzz, go to Google images and look up these ideas and just have a collage," he advises. Even four or five pictures that define the desired look are enough. This clear vision, combined with an upfront budget, allows the team to proceed directly and use time and resources wisely. Getting multiple reputable estimates is also recommended to ensure the homeowner finds a trustworthy and solid partner.
